Designing a modern hallway

The hallway is the first point of contact with the house’s atmosphere. This is where guests form the first impression of you and the interior of other rooms. Remember, you can’t make a first impression twice. If you want to surprise your guests, consider choosing an unusual design for your hallway by going for one of the popular options such as designer furniture, additional lamps, or trendy materials.

In this article, we will explain how to make your hallway comfortable, practical, and distinctive.

Practical materials

In addition to the aesthetic component, a modern hallway needs to be practical, functional, eco-friendly, and wear-proof. While exceptionally charming and eye-pleasing, natural materials require delicate care and are not always free of imperfections, which is something to consider when choosing them for your project.

For the hallway, you need advanced performance materials such as porcelain stoneware, whose guaranteed technical and operational characteristics don’t change over time. Porcelain stoneware has no potential hidden defects and doesn’t lose strength, which makes it one of the most durable and wear-resistant materials you’ll find on the market.

Space characteristics

When designing the hallway, you should take into account everything from room size and lighting to storage space and accessories. Also, don’t forget that the hallway serves as a “portal” to the other rooms in the apartment or house, so it should be neutral, comfortable, and match the rest of the interior.

Lighting

Lighting is another excellent tool for making the hallway more attractive. If the hallway has a very low ceiling, opt for track lights or LED strips on the ceiling and the floor. A high ceiling will fit a beautiful designer chandelier that’ll provide plenty of light. Another way to make the room look even bigger is to use mirrors, which reflect light.

Hallway color schemes

LIGHT SHADES

Pastel colors are a sure option for both large and small hallways. The great thing about light colors can be easily combined with cold shades. The Dust color from the Millennium faux concrete tile collection is a warm beige shade for a cozy interior. Designer Christina Bachurina used it in her project to cover the floor in the hallway. The tiles, semi-circular mirror, textured walls, upholstered banquette, and decor complement each other and create a special atmosphere.

White is also a popular choice for hallways. But remember that it attracts dirt more easily. To make his project more practical, designer Artyom Alekseev used porcelain stoneware tiles for the floor and walls. To bring this idea to life, he used white Bianco Michelangelo faux marble tiles with barely visible gray veins from the Charme Deluxe collection for the walls and neutral gray Imperiale tiles from the Charme Evo collection for the floor. Both collections recreate marble’s unique beauty and are perfect for elegant interiors.

DARK SHADES

Don’t be afraid to use dark colors in a large hallway, but remember the “rule of three colors:” the primary color should take up 60% of space, the secondary color should take up 30%, and various the third color should be used for accents and account for 10%.

The primary color is usually the color of the walls. The second color may be present on the chair and sofa upholstery, textiles, or cabinet furniture fronts. The third color should be reserved for accessories.

If you have a small hallway, dark colors could make it look even smaller, so try not to overload the interior with dark hues.

Designer Elena Andrianova seamlessly blended black Laurent faux marble tiles from the Charme Extra collection into a small light hallway project. The dark floor’s pronounced veins perfectly match the rest of the decor elements.

When choosing tiles for the hallway, not everyone thinks about the fact that it’s equally important to protect the walls in the entrance area.

However, designer Kira Toporkova does. In her project, she lined the wall by the entrance door with large faux concrete 80×160 Millennium Black tiles and covered the floor with faux travertine WonderfulLife Graphite tiles in the practical 80×80 square format, seamlessly connecting the entrance to the rest of the hallway and making the space feel whole.

Hallway furniture and accessories

There is an endless selection of hallway furniture on the market, so you’ll have no problem finding something for every taste and need. If the standard options don’t suit you, you can always order custom-made furniture tailored to your wishes regarding size, materials, and cost.

The Trinity console from the Italon Home collection will fit perfectly into any hallway. Thanks to the possibility of personalization, it will either harmoniously complement or create a spectacular contrast with the porcelain stoneware on the floor and walls. It’s up to you to decide!

Before buying furniture, make sure to take all the necessary measurements. You’ll want the furniture doors to open freely, so consider all the distances. Take advantage of the different visual techniques: use light hues and mirrors to add light and space, opt for dark colors for a more intimate feel, or add some bright accents for a splash of color.

The hallway’s design reflects your attitude to yourself and your guests, so it’s a good idea to put a lot of thought into it. The interior should be cozy, make you feel at home, and create a good mood.
